Askar introduces the brand new 80PHQ, a refractive astrograph that becomes the second long focal length model in the PHQ series.
The finish of the 80PHQ features a uniform coating. Its slightly textured ivory paint provides a pleasant feel while improving grip and preventing the tube from slipping due to moisture. It also adds an aesthetic touch by breaking visual monotony. A pair of CNC machined black clamshell style rings firmly secures the OTA. Turning two knobs is enough to open or close the rings, simplifying setup and avoiding repeated use of tools such as Allen keys. Green elements such as the dust cap, handle, locking screws, focusing knob and decorative rings bring a lively visual identity. White and green make up the signature look of the PHQ series. At the rear of the tube is a rigid 3 inch rack and pinion focuser featuring dual speed fine adjustment. The 80PHQ rotator carries precise graduation marks enabling reliable adjustments.
The 80PHQ inherits the optical design of the PHQ series with a three plus one quadruplet formula that includes two ED glass elements which effectively reduce chromatic aberration and enhance sharpness and contrast. PHQ astrographs use an integrated optical assembly where every lens contributes to the system. This architecture ensures optimized lens positioning, better vignetting control and superior image quality. Its focal ratio is f/7.5, making it a long focal astrograph compared with other Askar models including the 107PHQ which is f/7.
Some users hesitate between the 107PHQ and the 80PHQ because their specifications seem similar, and for beginners in astrophotography the abundance of technical data can make choosing difficult.
In practice, although both instruments share refined mechanics and strong optical performance, they differ noticeably. The 80PHQ is more compact. The 107PHQ measures 603 mm and weighs 5.7 kg while the 80PHQ measures 448 mm and weighs 4.7 kg. If your mount supports less payload or if you prefer an instrument that is easier to transport, the 80PHQ is an excellent option.
Like the 107PHQ, it does not require any back focus calculation within its connection range. In addition, it does not need an additional field flattener thanks to its integrated flat field optical design, which simplifies its use.
