Description

The Baader Planetarium 2 inch ClickLock SCL is a high-precision clamping system designed for large Celestron Schmidt-Cassegrain and EdgeHD telescopes equipped with the 3.3 inch rear thread.

It is specifically designed for the Celestron 9.25 inch EdgeHD, C11 Schmidt-Cassegrain and EdgeHD, and C14 Schmidt-Cassegrain and EdgeHD telescopes.

On the telescope side, the ClickLock uses a 3.3 inch SCT connection measuring 84.2 mm. On the accessory side, it directly accepts standard 2 inch, or 50.8 mm, accessories.

The ClickLock system replaces traditional locking screws. A rotation of only 20 degrees with gentle fingertip pressure on the knurled lever is sufficient to firmly secure an eyepiece, star diagonal, camera or other compatible 2 inch accessory. The mechanism can also be operated easily while wearing gloves.

The mechanical principle used by Baader is derived from professional tool holders used in modern CNC machining centers. Clever use of leverage multiplies the applied torque, while the inserted component is held from three sides in a manner similar to a quick-action chuck. This prevents tilting movements and provides stable positioning of the accessory.

The mechanism also incorporates a ratchet function that provides both acoustic and haptic indication of the clamp position. The user can therefore hear and feel whether the ClickLock is open or closed, making operation particularly convenient in darkness.

Clamping is provided by a massive, thick-walled hard bronze compression tension ring. It retains its shape even after many years of use and distributes pressure around the inserted accessory. Expensive equipment can therefore be securely held without scratches or pressure marks caused by conventional locking screws.

Baader states that its ClickLock clamps are assembled from seven precision-machined components. The 2 inch system has been designed with particularly high mechanical strength to securely support heavy astronomical accessories.

The position of the rotary lever can be adjusted for convenient left-handed or right-handed operation. Depending on the ClickLock model, this adjustment is performed using six slotted screws or six Allen screws.

To demonstrate the mechanical strength of the system, Baader reports an extreme test involving a complete Celestron C14 equipped with an SCL ClickLock clamp, a 2 inch ClickLock star diagonal and a Scopos 30 mm Extreme eyepiece. The complete C14 was lifted by the eyepiece. Baader explicitly warns that this test should not be imitated.

The Baader ClickLock SCL provides a 50.8 mm clear aperture, an outer diameter of 89.5 mm and an optical length of 40 mm. Its net weight is 0.22 kg.

Regarding mechanical compatibility, Baader specifies that the SCL ClickLock is dimensioned for Celestron telescopes with an approximately 3.28 inch thread outside diameter.

It generally also works with 3.25 inch threads found on some Meade telescopes. However, because the Meade thread is slightly smaller and manufacturing tolerances can vary, the connection may occasionally be slightly loose. In this situation, Baader recommends using the 2 inch thread on the backplate reducer together with the appropriate Baader SC/HD ClickLock.

With its rapid clamping mechanism, massive mechanical construction and hard bronze compression ring, the Baader ClickLock SCL provides a robust solution for replacing the standard clamping system on large Celestron telescopes and securely supporting heavy or valuable 2 inch accessories.
