Description

The Wanderer Astro 8x36 Super Low-Profile filter wheel is intended for imaging systems requiring compact mechanical integration. It offers eight slots, including a dedicated eighth slot that can accept either an additional unmounted filter or a dark filter supplied as standard, allowing calibration frame capture without modification of the optical train.

Its thickness starts at 14 mm depending on the configuration. This design allows use in situations where back focus or focus travel is limited, particularly when installing a CAA or an ETA. The reduced distance between the filters and the sensor helps limit vignetting. Spacers are supplied to increase the total thickness up to 20 mm. The 16 mm version is supplied with two 2 mm spacers, while the 14 mm version includes three 2 mm spacers.

The filter wheel adopts a fully enclosed design, with no exposed motor or electronics. The one-piece filter mask prevents stray light from entering through the sides or openings and reduces the number of screws required to secure the filters, simplifying installation. Conventional filter masks are also included to meet specific requirements, particularly mixed use of unmounted filters and 2-inch filters.

Protection against light leaks is ensured by stepped light-blocking grooves and the supplied self-adhesive sealing foam. The eighth slot is designed to allow mounting screws to pass directly through to the camera, avoiding removal of the filter disk during installation.

The structure integrates a central mounting screw, increasing rigidity compared to conventional designs. The wheel is compatible with ZWO, QHY, ToupTek, and PlayerOne cameras and off-axis guiders in APS-C and full-frame formats. A dedicated recessed groove allows installation of QHYCCD cameras without increasing back focus.

Operation is supported down to −30 °C. The motor requires a 12 V power supply, and a 12 V hub output is integrated to simplify cabling. ASCOM and INDI compatibility allows simultaneous connection of multiple filter wheels with individual identification.

Starting from an astonishing 14mm thickness (see dimensions for details), it offers astrophotographers greater flexibility. In situations with limited back focus or focus travel, if you need to install a CAA or an ETA, the Snowflake filter wheel may be your only viable option. Additionally, the reduced distance between the filters and the sensor increases the effective aperture of the filters, helping to minimize vignetting.
The product comes standard with back focus spacers, allowing users to increase the thickness up to 20 mm to accommodate conventional back focus solutions. For the 16 mm model, two 2 mm spacers are provided. For the 14 mm model, three 2 mm spacers are included.

Fully Enclosed Design
No exposed motors or circuit boards, offering a uniquely refined aesthetic. The innovative one-piece filter mask not only offers a seamless, premium appearance but also prevents stray light from entering through the filter sides or any openings. Moreover, the one-piece mask requires only half the number of screws to securely hold the filters, simplifying installation. This design also prevents accidental screw drops into the filter wheel gaps or onto the camera.

Easier Camera Connection
The specially designed 8th filter slot features a unique shape that allows screws to pass directly through the filter disk and attach to the camera. This eliminates the need to disassemble the filter disk when connecting filter wheel to your camera, greatly simplifying the process and avoiding potential mishaps.

Exceptional Rigidity
Unlike most filter wheels, which only have fixing screws around the perimeter, the Snowflake filter wheel includes a central mounting screw, creating a more rigid, unified structure. Under the same conditions, deformation is reduced by half compared to conventional designs, effectively doubling rigidity.

Compatible with Major Brands
The Snowflake filter wheel features versatile and compatible mounting holes, supporting ZWO, QHY, ToupTek, as well as PlayerOne APS-C and full-frame cameras, and most of their OAGs. It also includes a recessed groove specifically designed to accommodate QHYCCD cameras without increasing the back focus.

Extreme Cold Tolerance
The powerful motor and the zero-flex design allow the Snowflake filter wheel to operate smoothly even in winter conditions (-30℃). The motor requires a 12 V supply, and we thoughtfully provide a 12 V hub output to simplify wiring.
