The Wanderer Astro 8x50 Super Low-Profile Filter Wheel is a high-precision motorized filter wheel intended for advanced and professional astrophotographers. It features eight total slots, including seven standard filter positions and an additional eighth slot designed to hold either an extra unmounted filter or the supplied dedicated dark filter. This allows dark-frame acquisition without altering the imaging train, improving workflow efficiency while maintaining precise system alignment during long imaging sessions.
The filter wheel is compatible exclusively with 50 mm unmounted filters. The additional eighth slot does not support 2-inch filters. Filters thinner than 2.5 mm require additional shims that are not included. The low-profile design is specified with an ultra-thin thickness of 14 mm, while the mechanical structure is also described with a thickness of 16 mm depending on configuration. Back-focus spacers are supplied to increase the total thickness up to 20 mm to accommodate standard back-focus requirements, with three 2 mm spacers included for the 14 mm version.
Filter positioning is driven by a gear-based system combined with a damped anti-backlash mechanism and high-precision sensors. This configuration ensures excellent repeatability and long-term consistency, particularly for flat-frame calibration. The filter wheel features a fully enclosed design with no exposed motors or electronic boards. Its one-piece filter mask provides a refined appearance while preventing stray light from entering through filter edges or openings, and reduces the number of screws required for filter installation.
Light-leak protection is further enhanced by a combination of precision-machined grooves and high-density sealing foam, ensuring a fully sealed optical path and preserving image contrast during long exposures. The specially shaped eighth slot allows mounting screws to pass directly through the filter disk to the camera, simplifying installation without removing the filter disk.
Structural rigidity is improved through the use of a central mounting screw in addition to perimeter screws, reducing deformation by half compared to conventional designs. The filter wheel is compatible with a wide range of cameras and off-axis guiders from ZWO, QHY, ToupTek, PlayerOne APS-C and full-frame systems. A recessed groove is included to accommodate QHYCCD cameras without increasing back focus.
The powerful motor and zero-flex design allow reliable operation in extreme cold down to −30 °C. The motor requires a 12 V power supply, and a dedicated 12 V output is provided for simplified cabling. The filter wheel supports ASCOM and INDI drivers and allows simultaneous connection and individual identification of multiple units. Power supply is required and sold separately.

8-slot design (7 + 1)
The 8th slot is designed to accommodate either an additional unmounted filter or the included dedicated dark filter, allowing dark-frame acquisition without modifying the imaging train. This design enables on-demand calibration frame capture at any time and in any environment, while improving workflow efficiency and maintaining precise filter alignment and system integrity during long imaging sessions.
Compatible filters: 50 mm unmounted filters.
Note: the additional 8th slot does not support 2" filters. Filters thinner than 2.5 mm require additional shims (not included).

Thinner for more possibilities
With an impressive thickness of 16 mm, the Snowflake filter wheel offers astrophotographers greater flexibility. In configurations where back focus or focus travel is limited, or when installing a CAA/ETA, the Snowflake may be the ideal solution. In addition, the reduced distance between the filters and the sensor increases the effective aperture of the filters and helps minimize vignetting. The Snowflake is supplied with back-focus spacers, allowing the thickness to be increased up to 20 mm to accommodate standard back-focus solutions. For the 14 mm model, three 2 mm spacers are included.

High positioning accuracy
The Snowflake filter wheel uses a gear-driven system combined with a damping anti-backlash mechanism. Paired with high-precision sensors, this system delivers excellent repeatability, ensuring long-term consistency for flat frames.

Fully enclosed design
No motors or electronic circuit boards are exposed, providing a particularly refined appearance. The innovative one-piece filter mask not only delivers a seamless, premium look, but also prevents stray light from entering through the filter sides or any openings. In addition, this one-piece mask requires only half the number of screws to securely hold the filters, simplifying installation. This design also prevents accidental screw drops into the filter wheel openings or onto the camera.

Light-leak protection: groove and foam design
The light-blocking groove and sealing foam work together to ensure a fully sealed optical path. The precision-machined groove guides the filter into position, while the high-density foam creates a snug barrier around the edges, preventing stray light from entering the filter wheel. This combination preserves image contrast, eliminates unwanted gradients, and ensures cleaner, more reliable data during long-exposure astrophotography sessions.

Easier camera connection
The specially designed 8th filter slot features a unique shape that allows screws to pass directly through the filter disk and attach to the camera. This eliminates the need to disassemble the filter disk when connecting the filter wheel to the camera, greatly simplifying installation and reducing the risk of handling errors.

Exceptional rigidity
Unlike most filter wheels, which only have fixing screws around the perimeter, the Snowflake filter wheel incorporates a central mounting screw, creating a more rigid and unified structure. Under identical conditions, deformation is reduced by half compared to conventional designs, effectively doubling rigidity.

Compatible with major brands
The Snowflake filter wheel features versatile and compatible mounting holes, supporting ZWO, QHY, ToupTek, as well as PlayerOne APS-C and full-frame cameras, and most of their off-axis guiders. It also includes a recessed groove specifically designed to accommodate QHYCCD cameras without increasing back focus.

Extreme cold tolerance
The powerful motor and zero-flex design allow the Snowflake filter wheel to operate smoothly even in winter conditions down to −30 °C. The motor requires a 12 V power supply, and a dedicated 12 V output is provided to simplify wiring.

ASCOM and INDI compatible
Supports simultaneous connection and individual identification of multiple Snowflake filter wheels via ASCOM drivers.
