Description
The Antlia CaK 3 nm Herschel Wedge with 1.25" filter is a dedicated solar imaging system for high-contrast observations of granulation, sunspots and photospheric structure at the CaK wavelength of 393.3 nm. Replacing the standard diagonal on a refractor, the system uses a 35 mm prism with anti-reflection coatings and a narrowband filter to deliver crisp images in a safe and efficient way.
The integrated 3 nm CaK filter is mounted in a 1.25" holder and provides high optical density protection: OD5 from 200–1200 nm and OD3 from 1200–1500 nm. The filter substrate is double-polished and optimized for thermal resistance, ensuring accurate CaK imaging with modern CMOS/CCD sensors.
Heat management is a key design feature. The system channels excess solar energy to a thick polycrystalline ceramic diffuser at the rear, coupled with venting slots and fins that dissipate heat safely. An adjustable iris-type brightness control allows the user to fine-tune the light level to suit camera sensitivity.
A built-in solar finder is included for easy alignment, and the entire unit is CNC machined for mechanical stability. The system is strictly intended for imaging and must never be used visually due to the eye’s poor sensitivity in the CaK band.
