The Baader IR Pass 685 nm 2 inch filter reduces the effects of atmospheric seeing for sharper planetary imaging. It transmits infrared wavelengths above 685 nm and is ideal for the luminance channel.
The Baader IR Pass 685 nm 2 inch filter is primarily designed for planetary imaging and contrast enhancement in the near-infrared spectral range. Its use reduces the influence of atmospheric turbulence on image sharpness.
The normally used visible spectral range extends approximately from 400 to 700 nm. The filter starts transmitting in the deep red before reaching its specified transmission range above 685 nm. This characteristic allows accurate focusing while subsequently taking advantage of longer wavelengths.
In this part of the spectrum, atmospheric air turbulence has a lower impact on image sharpness. The filter can therefore provide a sharper representation of dark structures and details on objects including Mars, Jupiter, the Moon and the Sun when used with an appropriate solar imaging configuration.
Baader highly recommends this filter for planetary imagers. It can be used to acquire the luminance channel of an image. This infrared luminance can subsequently be combined with Red, Green and Blue channels to create an LRGB image benefiting from the sharpness achieved in the near infrared.
The filter features a dielectric anti-reflective coating and is plane-optically polished. This construction is designed to maintain optical quality while minimizing unwanted reflections.
This version has a 2 inch diameter and is supplied mounted in a 6 mm LPFC cell. The filter substrate itself has a thickness of 2 mm without the cell.
The Baader IR Pass 685 nm is therefore a specialized filter for astrophotographers seeking to take advantage of longer wavelengths to reduce the effects of seeing and improve the apparent resolution of planetary and lunar details.
