The iOptron HEM44EC Hybrid Equatorial Mount with integrated iPolar electronic polar scope is a compact yet powerful solution designed for astrophotographers seeking portability, precision, and advanced features. As a direct result of iOptron’s decades of experience in mount engineering, the HEM44EC combines strain wave gear technology on the RA axis with a backlash-free worm/belt drive system on the DEC axis, forming a hybrid configuration that maximizes performance without requiring a counterweight.
Weighing just 6.2 kg, the HEM44EC supports payloads up to 20 kg without a counterweight (and up to 25 kg with a 10 lb counterweight), making it ideal for both compact and mid-sized imaging setups. The entire structure is CNC-machined from anodized metal, offering excellent durability, long-term stability, and a refined, rugged aesthetic.
The RA axis is equipped with a high-precision encoder delivering real-time periodic error correction (RPEC). This ensures exceptional tracking accuracy, often sufficient for unguided imaging with short to moderate focal lengths. The encoder used is the same as in the proven iOptron CEM40EC and GEM45EC mounts.
The DEC axis uses a belt-driven spring-loaded worm gear, completely eliminating mechanical backlash. This dual approach combines the weight efficiency of harmonic drives with the precision and cable-routing flexibility of traditional worm gear systems.
The mount features a fully integrated cable management system, with all cables routed through a stationary base—no more tangling or wrapping cables during slewing or tracking.
In the event of an unexpected power interruption, the electronic friction brake safely halts the movement, while the mount retains its pointing information thanks to its power-down memory function, allowing it to resume GoTo slews or tracking without realignment.
Polar alignment is made quick and accurate through the built-in iPolar electronic polar scope, even if the pole star is not visible.
Control options are extensive: the HEM44EC can be operated via Windows PC using ASCOM/iOptron Commander, MacOS via INDI, smartphone/tablet using Commander Lite or SkySafari, and Raspberry Pi through INDI drivers. The Go2Nova hand controller is also included, featuring a database of over 212,000 objects.
This mount is an ideal choice for those seeking a high-precision, cable-friendly, counterweight-free hybrid mount that delivers professional-level tracking and stability for astrophotography at home or on the move.
