The MeMstar pointing assistance device is designed to make locating celestial objects easier when using manual altazimuth instruments, such as Dobsonian telescopes. Fully manual, it requires no motors or encoders.
The compact box attaches directly to the optical tube using Velcro or equivalent support. Once paired via Bluetooth with the free MeMstar app (Android and iOS), it tracks telescope movement using built-in inertial sensors (accelerometers and gyroscopes).
After an initialization process involving a few reference stars (using the smartphone’s GPS), the system can guide the observer toward more than 15 000 celestial objects from the Messier and NGC catalogs.
Directional arrows and numerical indicators on the smartphone screen guide the user toward the target – when both vertical and horizontal values approach zero, the object is centered in the eyepiece.
The MeMstar provides a practical, cost-effective alternative to Push-To or GoTo systems while maintaining full manual control. Designed and assembled in France, it combines simplicity with functional precision for visual astronomers.
