DESCRIPTION
The ZWO AM5N is ZWO’s first mount using strain wave harmonic drive technology, a reliable system also used in robotics and aerospace, based on elliptical reducers and synchronous belts.

It supports up to 13 kg without counterweights and 20 kg with optional ones, while the head weighs only 5.5 kg. For optimal results, we recommend keeping the load under 12 kg without counterweights, and using a counterweight bar as soon as your OTA exceeds 5–6 kg.

It can operate in either equatorial or alt-azimuth mode, and is controlled via the joystick hand controller or a dedicated mobile/PC app. The mount is powered through a 12 V 3 A or 5 A source (not included).

Unlike traditional German equatorials, the AM5N doesn’t require constant balancing, thanks to its strain wave mechanism consisting of a wave generator, flexible spline, and rigid outer housing, delivering a 1:300 ratio.

New “N” features include a USB-C port, integrated DC power output, cable wrap prevention, periodic error reduced to ±10", redesigned azimuth adjustment, hex head screws, and a high-load mode for cold weather operation.

It’s best suited for wide-field imaging (up to ~1 m focal length). The dual-axis motors provide sidereal tracking, GOTO, manual motion, and guiding. It connects via Wi-Fi, wired USB, Bluetooth, or is fully integrated with ASIAIR. Firmware updates are simple and ZWO accessories (cameras, EAF, filter wheels) are fully compatible.

Do not remove the ASIAIR mounting plate. If removed, do not reinsert the original screws into open threads to avoid internal damage.
