GSO Newton 200/1000 F5

Overview

The GSO Newton 200/1000 offers serious amateur astronomers a high-quality reflector telescope with robust mechanics and bright, contrast-rich optics. Its f/5 focal ratio makes it an excellent all-round instrument for visual observation and entry-level astrophotography.

Weighing approximately 9 kg, this OTA (optical tube assembly) can be easily used with a variety of modern equatorial mounts, including those with harmonic drive or belt-driven systems such as those developed by manufacturers like iOptron. This flexibility makes it suitable for portable setups as well as stationary configurations.

Technical specifications

  • Optical design: Newtonian reflector

  • Aperture: 200 mm

  • Focal length: 1000 mm (f/5)

  • Primary mirror: parabolic BK7, 94% reflectivity coating

  • Secondary mirror: 63 mm diameter

  • Central obstruction: approx. 31.5%

  • Focuser: 2" Crayford with 1:10 micro-reduction and 1.25" adapter

  • Finder scope: 8x50 straight-through

  • Cooling: rear-mounted fan to accelerate thermal stabilization

  • Tube: steel, 930 mm length, 230 mm diameter

  • Weight (tube only): ~9 kg

  • Included accessories:

    • Pair of mounting rings with Vixen-style dovetail

    • 35 mm extension ring (for visual focus)

    • Dust caps for optics and focuser

Mounting and usage considerations

Due to its manageable size and moderate weight, the GSO Newton 200/1000 OTA pairs well with equatorial mounts offering a visual payload capacity of at least 12 kg. For imaging, a higher tolerance is preferred to maintain guiding accuracy.

It can be used on various modern equatorial mounts incorporating strain wave gearing, direct drive, or belt-driven mechanisms, including those found in product lines from manufacturers like iOptron. This makes the telescope adaptable for use in both mobile astrophotography rigs and fixed observatories.
