Camera QHY5L-II Mono

A High Sensitivity CMOS Guider / Planetary Camera

The QHY5L-II is available in both mono and color versions.  The mono sensor has peak QE of 74% making it quite sensitive.  It also has very low read noise.  At low gain the read noise is approximately 7e-, at middle gain it is 4e-, and at high gain it is as low as 2e-.  The high QE and low read noise allows you to use a small guide scope and you will still capture guide stars everywhere you look.  The camera has a small 1.25-inch diameter body, making it an ideal lightweight guiding camera.  A locking ring around the body lets you set it so that it is parfocal with your favorite eyepiece.  This camera is small but powerful.  It incorporates an improved thermal design that transfers the heat from the CMOS sensor to the metal case quickly.
The QHY5L-II provides high speed data transfer performance. It will output 30FPS@1280x960 resolution, and 200FPS@320*240 resolution.  This frame rate is quite good for planetary imaging.
The QHY5L-II is supplied with WDM drivers which means you can use it as a high performance  webcam for video chat or live broadcast video.  You can share your astronomy viewing in real time with your friends and family.
The QHY5L-II's high sensitivity and low noise is a highlight of the QHY5-II series.  With the extraordinary QE of 74%, the QHY5L-II's sensitivity even exceeds many CCD cameras.  It is said the QHY5L-II's image quality exceeds even ICX618 based cameras.. The sensor's on-chip FPN (Fixed pattern Noise) calibration function solved the major problem of CMOS technology. The image is clear and uniform even under high gain.  With these advantages, the QHY5L-II produces outstanding image quality for planetary imaging, guiding, deep sky imaging and all sky imaging.
The QHY5L-II-M is the mono version.  The QHY5L-II-C is the color version.  Each version has a standard package and a premium package.  The QHY5L-II-C camera with standard package is USD245 and The QHY5L-II-M camera with standard package is USD249

Planetary Imaging
The frame rate of the QHY5L-II is 30FPS@1280x960 and 106FPS@640x480. For planetary imaging, the high rate can reduce the effects of atmospheric turbulence that would otherwise blur the image over longer exposure times.  Although QHY5L-II is a USB2.0 camera and the frame rate range is from 30 to 200 frames, this frame rate is still very suitable for planetary imaging with modest telescopes because a higher frame may cause exposures to be too short for small apertures.
Lunar Imaging
It is very easy to get high resolution lunar imaging with the QHY5L-II.  Image stacking can bring out a wealth of lunar detail.  The following images are taken by QHY5L-II users. Some of the pictures are mosaics.  Please click an image to see a larger version.
Solar Narrow banding Imaging
The QHY5L-II can be used with a narrow band solar telescope to do solar H-alpha imaging.  It can capture the atmospheric granulation and flares in the chromosphere.  You can capture a time-laps video to display the solar activity.  The following image is taken by a QHY5L-II-M user.
Deep Spece Imaging
Although the QHY5L-II is not a cooled camera, it still has capablity to capture some bright deep space objects, especially small planetary nebula and small galaxies.  Normally it can be done by taking many short exposure and stacking. You may need to enable the auto-dark frame subtract function of EZPlenatary to get realtime dark frame calibration to remove the thermal noise on longer expousres.  Please note you need to re-initiaize the auto-dark frame calibration if you change the gain or exposure time. The following pictures are DSO images by QHY5L-II users. Click an image to see a larger size.
Electronic Finder Scope
When you connect the QHY5L-II with an 8mm, F/1.0 lens you can use it as a electronic finder scope. It has very high sensitivity and helps you locate the direction and field of your telescope.
All Sky Camera
After connecting a 180 degree fisheye lens, the QHY5L-II can be used as an all sky camera, cloud monitor, meteor camera, and mysterious event cam.
AutoGuiding
The QHY5L-II is famous for its autoguiding ability.  In 2015, QHYCCD released a miniGuideScope specifically for the QHY5L-II.  The QHY5L-II is compact and lightweight and very suitable as a super portale guiding system. The QHY5L-II has 74% high QE, so you will find a guidestar everywhere you look. The QHY5L-II can be installed into the QHYOAG with a minimum backfocus.
When the pixels of a guide camera becomes small and QE becomes high, you may not need a big guide scope, smaller pixels can detect the guide error in a shorter focal length.  And, when the focal lenth is reduced, the FOV becomes larger, so it is easier to find bright guide stars.
QHYCCD's new miniGuideScope is based on just this idea. The QHY5L-II has 74% high QE, 4 electron readout noise and small 3.75um pixels. This camera is idea for a short focal length guide scope. The miniGuideScope is a 30mm f/4.3 (130mm FL) ultra-small telescope.  It has no complex focal adjust system.  Just rotate the front of the OTA and it provides fine focal adjustment.  Once focus is achieved, the tube can be locked into position and there is not need to focus again unless the system is moved.
The miniGuideScope provides pin-point star images as sharp as any lens in the industry.
